Lynchburg, VA: Old City Cemetery - One Room Chapel
Here is the cutest chapel ever. It's in our little town of Lynchburg, in a 200 year old cemetery. Yes, I said cemetery.
It's a small one room chapel that was build as a reproduction of the Ivy Hill Chapel Church in Bedford, VA. The chapel was built using materials from the Hermon Methodist Church that was dismantled in 2004 for use for the cemetery's bicentennial chapel in 2006.
Inside the chapel the 100 year old hand made pews salvaged from the Hermon Methodist Church can hold a maximum of 50 adults. Other items such as the stone foundation, ceiling beams, beaded board, floor boards, piano, pump organ, pulpit, altar cross, attendance board, and communion service were also salvaged from the old church.
However, the bicentennial bell, which is still rung by hand was made by Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London, England. It is rung for special occasions such as weddings. The rental fee for the chapel is reasonable, at $250.00 for the whole day. However if you are interested in finding out more information, please contact the cemetery's office at (434) 847-1465.
